Welcome back! In our last post, our North Raleigh day care offered a few ways to entertain your preschoolers at home, during a snow day! Fun, educational activities are great things to have on the back burner for days that need a bit of spur of the moment planning! Snow days are pretty common this year and BrightHaven is here to offer you a few more activates to do during a snow day at home!
North Raleigh Day Care: Educational Snow Day Activities!
According to herviewfromhome.com, “Create a train like atmosphere with your furniture. Have your kids make train tickets. Then read the story and let their imagination take off.”
In addition, herviewfromhome.com suggests that children “love competition, consider a Wii tournament or Uno.” Boys, especially, will love this activity.
Make Snow Ice Cream
Teaching the kids how to read fractions and measure is a great way to spend an afternoon. Use this recipe for a delicious treat!
- 1/2 cups half & half or whole milk
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 4 cups of clean snow or shaved ice
Stir the milk, sugar and vanilla together until the sugar dissolves. Add 4 cups of snow & stir until you get the same consistency of ice cream.
Have the kids help you make cookies and finger foods for lunch. Then, allow them to choose a spot on the floor, anywhere in the house (within reason, of course!) too set up an indoor picnic!
Another great recipe that teaches children measurements is homemade play dough. According to aviewfromhome.com use:
- 1 cup flour 1/2 cup salt 2 tbsp. cream of tartar
- 2 tbsp. oil 1 cup water food coloring (optional)
- Scent (cinnamon, vanilla, mint, etc. – also optional)
In a saucepan, mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, scent ingredient, and oil. Slowly mix in water until it’s all smooth. Then turn the heat on medium and stir until it forms a ball of dough. Once it’s a ball, plop it onto some wax paper until its cool enough for you to touch.
Once the dough is set and cooled, encourage kids to get creative and make something fun and unique. Have an art show afterwards, displaying their creations around the house! This is also a great activity for neighborhood kids to join in on.
